This small kyusu is made by Tatsuo Umehara of the Hokuryu Kiln, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan and a major kyusu production center in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, where three generations of kyusu have been produced.

The shape of this kyusu is called a "tama-shape," and is characterized by the line of the lid that gently leads from the body. The lid fits snugly over the body and prevents tea from spilling even when tilted, thanks to a process called "Futa suri," which is unique to Tokoname.

Traditionally, Tokoname kyusu are made of semi-porcelain clay and fired unglazed, a process known as yakishime. These are called stoneware and are fired at high temperatures to harden them and allow them to be used unglazed. Traditionally, stoneware vessels are suitable for kyusu (teapots).

The tea strainer is made of ceramic called "ceramesh," which is unique to Tokoname kyusu, and its numerous fine holes allow tea to be brewed without losing even relatively fine tea leaves. The kyusu has a capacity of about 170ml, so it is suitable for tea for one person or for multiple brewings.
