KATA Nagika, eggshell porcelain tea cup and saucer. Eggshell porcelain is a very thinly fired vessel made by a unique technique, and has a long tradition in Japan, having been produced since the Edo period.
The outside of the unglazed matte white cup and the surface of the saucer are embossed with the traditional Japanese "shippo pattern" in a glossy finish. The transparent glazed inner bottom of the cup has a lithophane tea flower pattern, a contemporary continuation of the style found on old eggshell porcelain cups.
The surprisingly thin and light ware of the cups allows the color of the tea to shine through depending on the way the light hits the cup, and the pattern shows a variety of expressions, making for a beautiful presentation of the tea ceremony.
