This is an original Oshiki created by kiwaha, carved from solid horse chestnut wood. An Oshiki is a traditional Japanese pedestal or tray used for holding tableware. Crafted at a specialized woodworking studio that produces tea ceremony utensils, this piece is made from high-quality domestic Japanese horse chestnut.
The shape is modeled after the Mokko (quince flower), a traditional motif often used in Japanese family crests. It combines simplicity with a subtle charm, instantly brightening any table setting. The underside features a tapered edge called Tatami-zuri, providing a comfortable grip and making it easy to use as a serving tray. It is perfect for serving tea and sweets or as a refined placemat for a light meal.
The finish uses an inorganic glass coating that highlights the raw beauty of the wood. Unlike urethane or varnish, this coating is free of organic solvents and penetrates deep into the material. By applying multiple layers and wiping them down—a process similar to traditional wiped lacquer (Fuki-urushi)—we achieve a natural, wood-like texture that provides protection against water and stains.
